A fresh future for the cleaning sector post-pandemic

From Parliament to popular culture, praise is being given to the professional cleaning sector, and it has gained wider public recognition, as COVID-19 continues to highlight its essential role.

Cleaning and hygiene have always been central to infection control, our health and to the perception of an organisation, yet its diligent workforce have tended to be ‘unsung heroes.’ Rising to the immense challenge of helping to protect people and places, its essential workers are finally getting the recognition they have long deserved.

There are many within the industry doing much to change perceptions. As a specialist PR and communications agency for cleaning and FM, we have worked with a broad range of UK and international organisations and trade bodies, over the last 14 years, to champion the sector. We’ve shared exciting innovations and success stories, helping to build reputations and change perceptions.

We’ve communicated best practice from industry experts on wide-ranging issues including healthcare infection control, workplace wellbeing, hand hygiene, sustainability, training, and technology. The wealth of content demonstrates this is a highly professional business sector, with exceptionally high standards and focus on continuous improvement.

Our managing director, Ceris, is also proud to be a Liveryman and Court Assistant of The Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners which encourages and helps to maintain those high standards of practice and integrity in the industry.

To help the industry to continue to showcase its innovation during the pandemic, we developed a high-tech, virtual event, Cleaning Interactive held from 6-7 October 2020. This enabled the sector to continue to engage with valuable existing and potential customers and suppliers, and share best practice with others in the industry. The digital event allowed the personal interaction that people still enjoy, and greater engagement, in a safe, online space.

There’s no doubt that COVID-19 will shape the reputation of the sector for years to come. The pandemic has given the public a unique insight into the industry in action; highlighting the importance of thorough and regular cleaning and ongoing innovation. It has also proved that increasing transparency and professionalism is key to redefining its narrative.

So how do we live up to the challenge of making sure the industry continues to receive the recognition it deserves? We must continue to showcase best practice. The industry has an opportunity to share their good news stories and show what can be achieved when some of the best innovators, and strategic thinkers in the cleaning industry work together towards a single goal.
